Photos from Paraguay
The axis of power

Itapui has build the largest hydro-electric plant in the world. It produces 80 % of the electricity needed for the whole of Paraguay and 25 % of that of Brazil. I visited the dam and got a special tour into it's bowls. Here I am standing next to one of the 18 axels that connect the turbine below me with the generator above me. This 1,5 meter thick axel is solid and rotates at 90 rpm transferring 750 Mw. This equals  1,200,000 horsepower.  That is 20,000 Africa Twins full throttle. And they have 18 of these.
